Artist Statement

as the fisherman's veil opens up into his world
I encounter his timeless actions….

it is dawn

he starts to move with conscious steps
in the ritual battle for survival
he and his prey
they move together
break apart
they dance back and forth
struggle
they fight
in between the net's twisting body
between life and death
one will return.

a craftsman of the sea
under the early sun
one more time he has shed his skin
he understands the value of his new 'catch'
he understands the sustenance of his own life
he believes
that this time with persistence and dedication
he'll come back from Her world
the world of 'LA MAR'
she will not fish his soul away…
not this time.

Located on the Western coast of Venezuela,
the people of the Village of Chuao fish for survival.
